MAINE RACEWALKERS SCORE AT HARVARD
Adam Staier, a freshman at Mansfield University, PA, a graduate of Mt. Blue HS, Farmington, won the men's 3,000 meter racewalk here today in an impressive time of 12:35.54. He was followed closely by Zachary Pollinger, a high school junior sensation, walking for the New Jersey Striders, who clocked a fabulous time of 12:42.06. Both times were under the 12:45 qualifying standard the USATF National Indoor Track and Field Championships which will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston in Early March. Both walkers will compete in the prestigious Milrose Games in Madison Square Garden in early February prior to Nationals. Mark Dennett, a senior at Winthrop HS finished in 4th place with a time of 15:48.96. There were 10 walkers in the race.
In the women's race, three-time Olympian Michelle Rohl, one of Staier's coaches at Mansfield U., walked a sizzling 12:57.72 to edge out 2000 Olympic Trials 4th place finisher and 2004 Olympic Team hopeful Joanne Dow, of Manchester, New Hampshire, who finished in 12:58.84. The third and fourth place positions were traded back and forth several times between former American Record holder, many time USA National Team and World Championship team member, and Olympic trials competitor, Maryanne Torrellas from Connecticut, and Jasmine Brooks, a Dirigo HS senior. Torrellas finally prevailed for 3rd place in 14:47.35 with Brooks finishing 4th in 15:12.25. Carly Lochala, a high school sophomore at Mt. Blue, walked a personal best time (her first ever 3k race) of 16:16.78 for 7th place. High school senior Kate Dickinson from Marshwood completed her first 3k race in a respectable time of 18:17.37. There were 13 walkers in the race.
